Closet storage and organization is a unique challenge. Unlike other areas you may be organizing (junk drawers, linens, etc) clothes come in different colors, seasons, sleeve lengths, hemlines, etc. It’s no wonder you may need a little extra help to get your wardrobe organized and stored properly.
Set aside a few hours to do a complete overhaul of your clothes closet. You’ll need trash bags, storage solution options and be ready to cut the clutter once and for all.
Can’t find your favorite shirt? Tags hanging off of clothes you bought 6 months ago? Before you do anything else, learn how to declutter your closet.
- Group like with like: I prefer to group items by sleeve length and dressiness, not by color. If you’re like Danny Tanner from Full House and prefer clothing by color,go for it. I find that the first things I consider are Dressy vs Casual and What’s the Temp. So,I have short sleeve casual grouped together, short sleeve dressy,3/4 length casual,3/4 length dressy, etc.
- Use baskets and bins: the shelves in your closet are excellent for using containers to keep purses, hats, sweaters, etc.
- Edit your wardrobe: If it doesn’t fit,get rid of it. If you haven’t worn it in a year,it’s time to donate it.
- Shoe racks are your friend: I love shoes. I inherited this passion from my grandmother and thank her for it! But,my shoes can overtake my closet VERY quickly if I’m not careful. I use shoe racks on the floor of my closet. Over the door shoe organizers are great too.

Children’s Closet:
Use the same techniques as above, but make sure to keep items your child uses frequently at their height. Also, use clear plastic storage bins so they can see what is inside.
Office / Craft Closet:
Sometimes it’s not your clothes closet that is the problem. It’s the let’s-stash-everything-else-in-this-closet closet that can create a mess in a hurry. I recently redecorated my Office and when I did,I organized the closet to maximize the space.
First,I put a spare bookshelf in the closet. Yes,I could have bought closet shelving, but this was free! I put games, crafts, stationery, sewing, and gift wrapping supplies on it in baskets.
Next,I utilized the above shelf for things that were oversized or that I didn’t access very often (old pics,paperwork,to-do projects).
I used the rest of the floor space to store my file cabinet and scrapbooking paper file.
My favorite part of the closet is how i used the rod. I tied yarn to it and hung my rolls of gift wrap from it. I can see all of my gift wrap,it’s easily accessible, and super easy to cut off the amount I need.
